I'd been reading a book by writer Ta-Nehisi Coates entitled, "Between the World & Me" (which I have yet to finish), which was given to me as a gift by my right-hand man as a Best-Man gift. Then I discovered a track by a Cuban trumpeter Jorge Ceruto entitled, "3x7 é 21 = 3". This joint hit me hard. I was vibing & the HORNS. I stop. Hit replay on the few seconds of HORNS. Next thing I'm choppin' up the song quickly finishing with a dope-ass-sounds-like-the-breeze loop. So I glance at my studio desk which also serves as my bookshelf & BAM! "Between the World & Me". That's IT! The fuckin' hook. Pages of the book, along with my own Black experience helped me write the lyrics.

Me detengo.

VERSE 1
Antiquated thoughts everybody lay the sauce whether hanging from a noose or left cold from a bullet/
Pugilist I’m feuding with this white world, a stone’s throw away is just my baby girl/ We whip it & we earl “look for me in the world-wind”, NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE, police shot up his girlfriend/ They say it’s yo’ turn when it flashes fo’ ya eyes, poverty for the people capitalistic lies/.45 caliber or shotguns not random bruh, traffic stops are hazardous, matter-fact deadly/All created equal how wrong they really led me and I won’t return to stop and frisk don’t you see I’m shopping bitch?!
So, what is your object?
What is your obsession?
Between the World and Me
A word and some lessons
HOOK/CHORUS:
Between the World and Me…
As far as I can See
(Repeated 3 times)
Verse 2
Once upon a time in a place untold where truth wasn’t scarce and men wasn’t hoes/Where Sam Cooke would sing and reminisce on soul, I sat back and watched a plague unfold/Lower life expectancy, fast food delicacy, is it really welfare if I a’int doing good? /Make America Great, that’s sasquatch in the hood/ Suburban suicide, ya fuckin’ heritage is based off me not coming home alive/I get it Klu Klux sorority, false white majority, racialized violence corona-type tyrants/cracka rule supremacy world-wide endemically/Bust a nigga head to the white meat, born & bred to hate a mothafucka look like me
So, what is your object?
What is your obsession?
Between the World and Me
A word and some lessons
HOOK/CHORUS:
Between the World and Me…
As far as I can See
(Repeated 3 times)
